Melbourne’s Water Businesses

City West Water

City West Water provides drinking water, sewerage, trade waste and recycled water services to approximately 276,000 residential and 31,300 non-residential (industrial and commercial) customers in Melbourne’s central business district and inner and western suburbs.

City West Water’s boundaries contain the local government areas of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne (north of the Yarra River), Moonee Valley, Wyndham, Yarra and parts of Melton and Hume.

Relative to the other metropolitan Melbourne water retailers (South East Water and Yarra Valley Water), City West Water has a smaller customer base and geographic area, with a greater proportion of non-residential customers. These non-residential customers come from a range of sectors, including brewing, chemical manufacturing, oil refining, textile and automotive manufacturing.

City West Water’s residential customers are equally diverse, with 34% of people living within its boundaries speaking a language other than English at home.

South East Water Limited

South East Water is one of Melbourne’s three state-owned metropolitan water retailers. South East Water’s vision is to offer a range of services that provide solutions to meet its customers’ water needs, grow value through operational efficiencies and new technologies as well as delivering improved social and environmental outcomes. As part of this vision, South East Water delivers conservation, education and community services to help its customers better manage their water requirements.

South East Water services 1.3 million people or 616,000 customers in an area of approximately 3640 square kilometres in the south-east of Melbourne.

South East Water also manages:

  •  infrastructure and assets valued at $1.4 billion
  • 8500 kilometres of water mains
  • 7900 kilometres of sewer mains
  • 317 water and sewage pump stations.

Yarra Valley Water

Yarra Valley Water is one of Melbourne’s three metropolitan water retailers, providing water and sewerage services to more than 1.6 million people and almost 50,000 businesses in the northern and eastern suburbs. Owned by the Victorian Government, its activities are overseen by an independent board of directors.

As a retailer, Yarra Valley Water buys water from Melbourne Water. The water purchased is mostly harvested from protected mountain catchments. Yarra Valley Water is also responsible for removing sewage for treatment and operating eight sewage plants.

Yarra Valley Water exists to provide water and sewerage services that contribute to the health and wellbeing of its customers and the environment.

It owns and manages assets valued at more than $1.8 billion and maintains and operates over 9000 kilometres of water mains and over 8500 kilometres of sewer mains. Its licensed area covers around 4000 square kilometres – from as far north as Wallan and extending to Warburton in the east.

Yarra Valley Water strives to provide customers with the highest quality water. Its commitment to customers has been internationally recognised. Yarra Valley Water is dedicated to delivering all of its services within the carrying capacity of nature.
