Chum Creek Primary School (CCPS) had a brush with disaster earlier this year, when the Black Saturday fires swept through their community. The school joined the Water - Learn it! Live it! program back in 2006 and were awarded their accreditation sign in 2007. The sign was damaged in the fires, along with the schools' art/technology shed, garden shed & equipment, playground equipment and a water tank, which melted in the blazing heat. CCPS, which was established in 1897, has a long history of awareness and concern for the environment. They are leading the way in the Shire of Yarra Ranges Learning for Sustainability program, achieving level 3 status and were also commended during their SWEP audit, with a retrofit deemed unnecessary. A winner in the Tank-A-Day competition, the school uses their large Blue Scope tank for watering the school vegie patch and also as a fire fighting reserve! Their current project Catch It aims to make the school self-sufficient in non-drinking water, by installing water tanks throughout the school grounds. A new sign was presented to the school and works are underway to replace the lost rain catchment system.
